Houston Mayor Annise Parker, in her final year in office, was the featured speaker at the May 12 meeting of the Houston Skyline Rotary Club at the Kim Son restaurant in the city’s old Chinatown section just outside downtown.
She engaged in a lively conversation with club founder Corbett Parker (no relation), an attorney and former member of the Bellaire City Council. Annise Parker has spoken to the club every year she’s been in the mayor’s seat. While they come from different ends of the political spectrum (Annise Parker is a Democrat and Corbett Parker is a Republican), they enjoy a friendly relationship.
[Note: In a former role as a community newspaper reporter, I covered both Parkers.]
Annise Parker discussed some of the legacy issues of her time as mayor, including Houston’s notorious pothole problem and its move toward becoming a greener and healthier city. But she gave only the slightest hint of her intentions after leaving the mayor’s office next January.
